Ben Askren Gives First Major Update Since Surviving Double Lung Transplant

The former UFC and Bellator standout posted a powerful update on Instagram this weekend, detailing the harsh physical aftermath of the double lung transplant that saved his life.
Askren, 41, had been hospitalized for severe pneumonia, a health crisis that led to four clinical deaths before surgeons performed the high-risk transplant. Now back home, he’s focused on recovery — but the toll has been immense.
“I’ve been home for four days now… it’s awesome,” Askren said in the video. “But I’ve still got so many physical challenges. I’m down 35 pounds, I can’t walk, and I can barely curl a five-pound dumbbell.”
Just weeks before the crisis, Askren says he was sprinting hills and curling 45-pound weights. The sudden loss of strength is staggering — yet so is his determination.
“I am where I am now,” he continued, pausing for breath throughout the video, “but I know I’ll be somewhere different in a month.”
Askren also shared how deeply the experience moved him, emotionally and spiritually. He described the outpouring of love from fans, wrestlers, and the MMA community as overwhelming.
“It felt like I got to attend my own funeral — the support was incredible,” he said. “Not just for me, but for my family.”
Askren’s wife Amy previously confirmed the lung transplant and the emotional toll it took on their family. The couple has three children, and fundraising efforts are ongoing to help cover the overwhelming cost of the procedure, which can range from $300,000 to $400,000 in the U.S.
A 2008 Olympian, Askren made history as a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion before becoming a world champion in both Bellator and ONE Championship. Known for his outspoken personality and undefeated streak outside the UFC, Askren finally debuted in the Octagon in 2019. He defeated Robbie Lawler in his debut before losing to Jorge Masvidal and Demian Maia, then retired later that year. He briefly returned in 2021 for a high-profile boxing bout against Jake Paul.
Now, he's taking on a new kind of fight — and staying true to the same mindset that made him a fan favorite.
“I love you guys and I appreciate you,” Askren said. “This has been tough, but I’m motivated to keep going.”
