BuzzLine News: Boston University College Students Demand Security, Accountability After Charlie Kirk Assassination

Conservative students at Boston University are calling for heightened security and stronger accountability measures following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
The BU College Republicans said Kirk’s killing has left their members shaken and fearful about hosting events on campus, particularly after seeing hostile online comments celebrating the shooting.
Calls for Protection and Accountability
In a letter sent Thursday to BU President Melissa Gilliam, the group urged the administration to provide “appropriate security” for upcoming events and to address students who have openly promoted violence in the wake of Kirk’s death.
“At BU, conservative students have long been marginalized, silenced by fear of social intimidation, academic penalty, or hostility,” the group wrote. “Rather than fostering intellectual diversity, the university has allowed a single ideological perspective to dominate, leaving students of differing opinions isolated.”
Vice President Philip Wohltorf, who also serves as a legislative aide in the Massachusetts State Senate, said the atmosphere is tense.
“Universities are supposed to be marketplaces of ideas,” Wohltorf told Fox News Digital. “If speakers or conservatives now have to worry about being shot or facing violence, then this marketplace closes.”
He said social media comments mocking or even celebrating Kirk’s murder, posted on forums like Reddit and Yik Yak, were “disgusting.”
Fear on Campus, but Commitment to Free Speech
The College Republicans recently began publicizing meeting times, but Wohltorf said the group now fears that openness could make it a target.
“We want to make sure this stays a safe space for our members,” Wohltorf said, adding that some students have already requested security for the next meeting.
Still, Wohltorf emphasized that the group intends to carry on Kirk’s legacy of free speech and debate. In fact, since the shooting, several new students have signed up for the club’s mailing list and pledged to attend.
A Broader Issue in Higher Education
Wohltorf said the tragedy underscores what he views as a lack of ideological balance in academia. He pointed to faculty surveys showing conservative representation in elite universities remains minimal, even as liberal professors overwhelmingly dominate.
He also noted that attempts to engage left-leaning student groups in debates at BU have been met with silence.
Kirk himself had built his reputation by sparking debates on campuses nationwide. His American Comeback Tour had just launched in Utah when he was fatally shot on September 10.
“We feel obligated to continue Charlie Kirk’s mission and legacy because he stood for free speech, the First Amendment, and challenging one another on campus through debates and ideas,” Wohltorf said.
BU’s Response
In a statement, a university spokesperson said President Gilliam will respond to the group’s letter and reiterated BU’s commitment to free expression and safety.
“We work hard to foster civil discourse among the BU community,” the statement read. “We’ve had world leaders and controversial speakers at BU many times over the years, and we take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our guests and the BU community. We condemn violence, and our hearts go out to the Kirk family, his friends, supporters, and every American.”
🗣️ Editor’s Take
The shockwaves from Charlie Kirk’s assassination continue to ripple across campuses nationwide. For conservative students at Boston University, the killing isn’t just a tragedy — it feels like a warning. Their call for protection reflects a growing fear that ideological differences could spiral into violence.
Universities must strike a difficult balance: protecting open dialogue while ensuring students of all political backgrounds feel safe enough to speak freely. Whether one agreed with Kirk’s politics or not, his death should prompt reflection about the tone of campus discourse in America.
