Charlie Sheen Opens Up on Past Same-Sex Encounters: “I Flipped the Menu Over”

Charlie Sheen has never been one to shy away from controversy, but in his upcoming Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, the actor delivers one of his most candid revelations yet. The Two and a Half Men star says he experimented with sex with men during some of the darkest chapters of his life — and for the first time, he’s speaking about it publicly.

Sheen recalls that it was during his battles with drug addiction, particularly heavy crack cocaine use, that he began to explore his sexuality in ways he hadn’t before. “I flipped the menu over,” he says in the doc, describing the decision to have sex with men after years of high-profile relationships with women. Asked how it feels to discuss this openly now, Sheen responds without hesitation: “Liberating. It’s f***ing liberating.”

The actor admits he initially kept these encounters secret, partly due to fear of extortion, which he says left him feeling “held hostage.” What started as a byproduct of drug abuse eventually became something he no longer felt the need to hide. “Some of it was weird. A lot of it was f***ing fun, and life goes on,” Sheen reflects in the film.

Sheen also touches on the fallout — both personal and public. He contracted HIV during this period, a diagnosis he revealed to the world in 2015 on the Today show. Since then, he says, he has maintained eight years of sobriety and views the experience as part of his journey toward self-acceptance and recovery.

A Life on Display

The Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, premiering September 10, 2025, offers an unfiltered look at Sheen’s life: from his meteoric rise in Hollywood to his infamous struggles with addiction and scandals. The two-part series also features insights from people who know him best, including Denise Richards, Jon Cryer, and Chuck Lorre.

Sheen’s memoir, The Book of Sheen, will be released the day before the documentary drops, promising even more raw stories and self-reflection.

Charlie Sheen’s willingness to put every part of his life under the microscope — even the most taboo — is classic Sheen. For decades, his personal life has been a spectacle, but this time, the story comes from his own voice rather than the tabloids. The combination of Netflix’s documentary and his memoir feels like Sheen’s final swing at controlling the narrative. Whether audiences view it as redemption, oversharing, or simply another act in the Sheen saga, one thing is clear: Hollywood’s “wild thing” is still finding ways to shock, surprise, and stay relevant.
