Lifestyle: America’s #1 Painkiller Might Be Making You Reckless – Study Links Over The Counter Drug to Cheating, Gambling & Risky Behavior

Acetaminophen — the main ingredient in Tylenol and the most commonly used pain reliever in the U.S. — may be doing more than dulling your headache. A striking new study from Ohio State University suggests it might also be dulling your fear… and cranking up your risk-taking instincts.
Over 100 million Americans take acetaminophen each year. Now, researchers say the drug may quietly be nudging people toward bolder, even reckless behavior — including gambling, cheating, and engaging in dangerous stunts.
To test the effects, scientists gave over 500 college students either a regular 1,000 mg dose of acetaminophen or a placebo. Then they played a virtual balloon game for cash — each pump earned more money, but risked popping the balloon and losing it all. The acetaminophen group took more risks, popped more balloons, and cashed out far less often.
What’s more, follow-up surveys revealed that people on acetaminophen viewed high-risk activities like bungee jumping, cheating, and excessive partying as less dangerous — but only when the situations were emotionally charged.
The findings go deeper than just fear suppression. Researchers believe acetaminophen mutes the brain’s natural danger signals, decreases awareness of mistakes, and quiets gut-level instincts that normally warn us when something feels wrong.
🧠 “Acetaminophen seems to make people feel less negative emotion when they consider risky activities – they just don’t feel as scared,” said Dr. Baldwin Way, lead researcher and psychology professor at Ohio State.
This isn’t the first time Dr. Way has linked the drug to emotional numbing. His previous studies suggest it also blunts joy, empathy, and distress over others’ suffering — a sobering trade-off for pain relief.
In real life, researchers worry these subtle effects could influence everything from financial decisions and road rage to infidelity and substance use.

As it turns out, your go-to painkiller could be hacking your emotional brakes, leaving you feeling just bold enough to make poor choices.
