MLB: Bellinger’s Historic 3-HR Night vs. Cubs — Robbed of a 4th, But Revenge Is Sweet!

NEW YORK — Cody Bellinger isn’t about revenge — but his performance Friday night at Yankee Stadium against his former team, the Chicago Cubs, felt like payback anyway.

Traded last December from Chicago to New York, Bellinger shared hugs and laughs with former teammates before the game. But on the field, “Belli” showed no mercy, blasting three home runs and driving in six runs in an 11-0 Yankees rout. He extended his hitting streak to 16 games and made MLB history by becoming the first player ever to hit three homers in his first game back against a former team.

Bellinger wasn’t done there — he nearly hit a fourth homer, robbed spectacularly by Cubs’ right fielder Kyle Tucker on a jaw-dropping catch at the wall.

“No revenge,” Bellinger said. “It was just fun to be out there and see a bunch of guys I hadn’t seen in a while.”

His first homer came in the third inning off righty Chris Flexen, a three-run shot that gave the Yankees a commanding lead. Two innings later, he added a two-run homer off Caleb Thielbar — his 18th career multi-homer game and first with the Yankees. The third blast, a two-run shot off Jordan Wicks in the eighth, was Bellinger’s first career three-homer game.

Yankee Stadium erupted, and despite his initial reluctance, Bellinger took a curtain call urged on by Aaron Judge and manager Aaron Boone.

In his first season with New York, Bellinger boasts a .285/.340/.498 slash line with 16 homers and 54 RBIs. Boone praised his adaptability and winning mentality, calling him “a winning player” who contributes in many ways beyond just power.

With his teammate Judge already an All-Star, Bellinger might just be next on the roster — and after this performance, it’s hard to argue otherwise.
