Overwatch 2 Dev Promises Big Comeback for Story Mode & Lore Fans— “We Dropped the Ball”

Aaron Keller Admits Blizzard Is Resetting Its Narrative Game After PvE Meltdown
Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 is finally owning up to what longtime fans have been saying for years: the lore is lagging—and the silence on story content is deafening. In a candid interview with content creator Jay3 and voice actor Conor McLeod, Game Director Aaron Keller admitted that Overwatch “dropped the ball” when it comes to PvE and narrative storytelling.
“To say Overwatch 2 is firing on all cylinders… we need to bring that story back,” Keller said, addressing growing criticism online.
The Overwatch franchise once led the gaming world in worldbuilding, character lore, and breathtaking animated shorts. From 2016 to 2023, Blizzard dazzled fans with Pixar-quality cinematics showcasing iconic heroes like Hanzo, Genji, Mei, and Reinhardt. But since Overwatch 2 launched in 2022, the cinematic drip has dried up. And worse, Blizzard scrapped its highly anticipated story-driven PvE Hero Mode in 2023—a move fans still haven’t forgiven.
Now in 2025, Overwatch 2 is in a reset era. Keller confirmed that while the campaign vision didn’t pan out, Blizzard hasn’t given up on telling more stories: “That was a bit of a reset moment for us… We want to get back to it. The universe and the characters are what make Overwatch special.”

After a rough couple of seasons and the crushing cancellation of its story campaign, Blizzard appears to be finally reading the room. In a market where games like Fortnite and Apex Legends regularly evolve with narrative arcs and crossover events, Overwatch 2 is feeling the pressure to evolve beyond “just another shooter.” As the player base cautiously returns during Season 17—with retro skins, PvP tweaks, and new heroes—the missing ingredient is clear: a reason to care again. Whether it’s a Netflix animated series or an in-game story renaissance, Blizzard has a second chance to revive its hero universe—if they don’t drop the ball again.
