Paulie Malignaggi Rips Conor McGregor’s Political Ambitions: “He’s Got No Backbone”

Former world champion boxer and long-time Conor McGregor rival Paulie Malignaggi is taking fresh shots at “The Notorious”—this time, not in the ring but in the political arena.

While Conor McGregor continues to float the idea of a return to the UFC, his current focus appears increasingly political. The former two-division UFC champion has openly hinted at a presidential run in Ireland, stirring headlines and controversy. But according to Malignaggi, McGregor’s leap into politics would be more spectacle than substance.

In a candid new interview with Spin Genie, the 44-year-old Malignaggi didn't hold back his skepticism.

“I don’t think McGregor will ever come back [to fighting], but he’ll tease it,” Malignaggi said.“As far as politics, he’s very bribeable as far as being lobbied. He could use his popularity [to get into office] if he gets lobbied and bribed by the right people.”

Malignaggi, who notoriously sparred with McGregor ahead of the Irishman’s boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, went on to question McGregor’s integrity and motivations.

“If he lets himself be bought by the right people, it’s possible,” he continued.“And he’s definitely a candidate to be bought by the right people because—like I said—he’s got no backbone.”

Malignaggi also commented on Ireland’s political landscape, and how McGregor's personal brand may clash with the nation's current sentiment.

“But I notice Ireland is sort of holding its own pushback against certain kinds of movements,” Malignaggi noted.“Considering all the money he’s made, and the potential that he has to help people—even in politics—he’ll only ever be about himself.”

While McGregor’s political ambitions remain uncertain, his polarizing image continues to spark debate. Whether in the Octagon or on the campaign trail, one thing is clear: Conor McGregor is never far from the spotlight—or from criticism.
