UFC Star Drops Bombshell: Why Justin Gaethje Is THE Next Title Contender

Justin Gaethje, currently ranked #3 in the UFC lightweight division and boasting three wins in his last four fights, was frustrated after being passed over for the title shot against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 — the opportunity instead went to Charles Oliveira.
Gaethje has openly stated that the UFC ‘owes’ him a title fight and even threatened retirement if he doesn’t get his shot against Topuria. UFC President Dana White dismissed Gaethje’s ultimatum as ‘whacky’ and told him to retire if that was his stance.
While Topuria’s first title defense could theoretically come against several contenders — including Arman Tsarukyan and fan-favorite Paddy Pimblett — fellow lightweight Dan Hooker believes Gaethje is the logical and most profitable choice for the UFC.
“Gaethje moves the needle” — Why Hooker thinks Gaethje is the best option
Though Paddy Pimblett is a huge UK star with a personal rivalry brewing against Topuria, Hooker pointed out on Submission Radio that the UFC’s primary market remains North America, where Gaethje is a major draw.
“Sure, they want to do Gaethje versus Paddy, but apparently Gaethje isn’t interested in that fight,” Hooker explained. “So it’s really down to Paddy or Gaethje.”
Hooker continued,
“The only pay-per-view sales that really matter are in North America. Paddy’s big on Instagram and all, but I don’t know if he actually moves the needle in North America.”“In contrast, Justin Gaethje definitely moves the needle there. He probably makes the UFC the most money as champion.”
Gaethje’s high-octane style, heavy leg kicks, and reputation as a knockout artist — just one KO away from $1 million in performance bonuses — make him a formidable and exciting challenger for Topuria.
Gaethje speaks out on missed chances and his patience for a title shot
Gaethje was initially slated to face Hooker in a five-round showdown at UFC 313 earlier this year. The bout was called off when Hooker withdrew with a broken hand. Gaethje stayed on the card, defeating Rafael Fiziev by decision in a short-notice replacement fight, marking a key win in his quest for the title.
Speaking on The Makeshift Podcast, Gaethje stressed his consistency and dedication:
“I’m the most consistent guy. Anyone who’s been consistent for their company deserves a thank you, a Christmas bonus, a good job. But nah, I’m done doing s— here…”“I love fighting for the UFC. I never want to fight anywhere else, but I’m not just gonna throw my legacy away for anybody. I’m waiting for them to announce it.”
Gaethje pointed out that Oliveira, who got the title shot over him, has a 2-2 recent record, while Gaethje is 3-1.
“What do you want me to do? Not my fault Dan Hooker dropped out…”
Bottom line:
While the UFC’s matchmaking options include big names like Pimblett and Tsarukyan, the buzz is clear — both fans and fighters like Dan Hooker believe Justin Gaethje should be the next to face Ilia Topuria for the lightweight title.
