Bill Maher Rips Whoopi Goldberg’s Iran Comments: Says Dems Need to “Do Something” About The View

Bill Maher and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) didn’t hold back Friday night, taking aim at Whoopi Goldberg and the hosts of The View after Goldberg made controversial comments comparing life for Black Americans to the oppression of women in Iran.

On Real Time, Maher applauded The New York Times for taking what he called a “sensible, not crazy woke” stance on gender issues — and then argued that the next thing Democrats should address is Goldberg’s rhetoric on The View.

“The second step [for Democrats] should be to do something about The View,” Maher said, referencing Goldberg’s remarks.

The controversy erupted Wednesday when Goldberg sparred with co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who was highlighting human rights abuses under Iran’s theocratic regime — including the execution of gay people and the imprisonment of women for dress code violations.

Goldberg pushed back, insisting:

“Let’s not do that. … We’ve been known in this country to tie gay folks to the car. I’m sorry, they used to just keep hanging Black people.”

Griffin disagreed, arguing the situations aren’t comparable. The exchange quickly went viral and sparked backlash online.

Rep. Wesley Hunt, a Black Republican congressman from Texas, joined Maher in condemning Goldberg’s comparison:

“My district in Texas is a white-majority district — Trump would have won it by 25 points. I’m a direct descendant of a slave, my great-great-grandfather was born on Rosedown Plantation. I’m being judged not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character,” Hunt said.

He added that for him, Goldberg’s rhetoric doesn’t reflect the real progress Black Americans have made:

“A lot of white people had to vote for me — a lot. So I don’t ever want to hear Whoopi Goldberg’s conversation about how it’s worse to be Black in America right now.”

Hunt also pointed to his own family’s story of generational change:

“My father grew up under Jim Crow. Now he’s the father of a U.S. congressman in a white-majority district who ran as a Republican. That’s America.

The conversation then touched on Juneteenth, when CNN contributor Paul Begala questioned why former President Trump doesn’t seem eager to embrace the holiday.

Hunt responded:

“I don’t want it. I don’t want Black History Month. I don’t want all these days to make everybody feel special. I’m an ’80s baby — everybody’s too sensitive anyway. We’re all Americans anyway.”
