On Wednesday, September 10, Kirk was seated under a tent at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, participating in an outdoor debate with students when a single gunshot rang out. Kirk was just 31 years old, a husband and father of two. He was on the first stop of his American Comeback Tour, organized by the student chapter of Turning Point USA, the conservative organization he founded.

The Arrest and Robinson’s Confession

On the evening of September 11, a family member of Robinson contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, stating Robinson had either confessed or strongly implied responsibility for the shooting.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that Robinson had discussed the killing with his father, saying Robinson admitted to retrieving a rifle from a drop point and later changing outfits to avoid detection. Investigators believe Robinson initially wore clothing seen in surveillance images—jeans, a flag-print long-sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and a hat—then switched before returning to his original attire.

Police later recovered the alleged murder weapon: a bolt-action rifle.

“There is one person responsible for what happened here, and that person is now in custody and will be charged soon,” Gov. Cox said. “He will be held accountable.”

President Donald Trump revealed the arrest on FOX & Friends, telling viewers, “I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody.” Trump added that a person close to Robinson tipped off law enforcement.
