Freddie Prinze Jr. Breaks Down Killer Twist in I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 Reboot – And Yes, That Shocking Sarah Michelle Gellar Cameo

With I Know What You Did Last Summer slashing its way into theaters this past weekend, Freddie Prinze Jr. is finally opening up about the film’s jaw-dropping twists—including his legacy character’s dark turn and a top-secret cameo that had fans screaming in theaters.

The legacy sequel, directed by Do Revenge’s Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, features the return of both Prinze and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Ray Bronson and Julie James, nearly three decades after surviving the original fisherman killer in 1997’s cult slasher classic. But don’t expect the couple to rekindle any sparks—this time around, Ray and Julie are bitterly divorced and emotionally scarred from the past.

🪓 From Hero to Horror: Ray Bronson’s Shocking Descent

In an exclusive Zoom interview, Prinze Jr. revealed he initially turned down the idea of reprising Ray—until Robinson pitched him a dark psychological twist: Ray Bronson is one of the killers.

What drew Prinze in wasn’t just the shock factor—it was the emotional realism behind Ray’s downward spiral. While Julie found healing over the years, Ray did the opposite. Haunted, angry, and unresolved, Ray’s suppressed trauma explodes after witnessing another tragedy—this time through Stevie (played by Sarah Pidgeon), a young woman he considers like a daughter. Together, they become the film’s lethal duo, exacting vengeance in a twisted attempt at justice.

“He hasn’t dealt with it the way Julie has. He’s run from it,” Prinze explained. “When Stevie’s trauma mirrors his own, it breaks him.”

Interestingly, Prinze wasn’t even present for most of his kill scenes. The production secretly filmed them in Australia with a body double to preserve the surprise—and it worked. Even fans at the premiere had no idea Ray was hiding behind the iconic slicker.

💥 The Scene Nobody Saw Coming: Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Secret Return

In a move that stunned fans, I Know What You Did Last Summer also features the return of Helen Shivers—played by none other than Prinze’s real-life wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar—in a surreal dream sequence. The cameo was kept under lock and key from nearly everyone on set, with only the director, screenwriter, and lead actress Madelyn Cline looped in.

Gellar’s brief appearance was enough to set the premiere audience ablaze with excitement.

“When she turned, the whole crowd… went bananas,” Prinze said. “They genuinely love Sarah and that character. It was so smart to include it.”

The film cleverly disguised Gellar’s visit to Australia as simply a wife supporting her husband—when in reality, she was gearing up for a return fans never thought they’d see again.

🎥 What It’s About (Spoilers Ahead)

Set in present-day Southport, NC, the new film follows five friends who cover up a deadly accident—only to find themselves hunted by a hook-wielding killer. With echoes of the original Southport Massacre resurfacing, the teens seek out Ray and Julie for help. But the trauma of their past—and Ray’s unraveling mind—bring terrifying consequences.

The film stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Sarah Pidgeon, and delivers brutal slasher vibes with an emotional core.

🎟️ I Know What You Did Last Summer is rated R and now playing in theaters nationwide as of July 18, 2025.
