According to the book, the pair first crossed paths in 1993 during auditions for Legends of the Fall. Paltrow didn’t get that role, but Pitt later personally recommended her to star opposite him in Se7en—a film that not only became a cult hit, but a turning point in both their careers.

At the time, Paltrow was weighing another role—Feeling Minnesota with Keanu Reeves. A friend reportedly asked, “Well, who do you want to date—Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves?” That clinched it. Gwyneth chose Brad and Se7en, while the Keanu role went to Cameron Diaz.

The pair’s romance would heat up quickly, leading to a 1996 engagement. But not everything was rosy behind the scenes.
