Anne Hathaway’s Verity Thriller Moves to Fall 2026 as Star-Studded Cast Builds Anticipation

Fans of Colleen Hoover’s dark and twisty storytelling will have to wait a bit longer for the big-screen adaptation of her best-selling psychological thriller Verity.

Amazon MGM Studios has officially pushed the release of Verity to October 2, 2026, shifting from its previously announced spring debut on May 15, 2026. The thriller, directed by Michael Showalter, features a powerhouse cast led by Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett.

The new release date places Verity in direct competition with director Alejandro Iñárritu’s yet-untitled Warner Bros. project starring Tom Cruise, which is also slated for October 2.

Written by Nick Antosca, the film’s script builds on earlier drafts from Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and writing duo Will Honley and April Maguire. The project brings together a strong production team that includes Hathaway herself, Hoover, Showalter, Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, and Jordana Mollick.

Verity follows the story of Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling author hired by Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett) to finish a bestselling book series after his wife, renowned novelist Verity Crawford (Hathaway), is left incapacitated by a mysterious accident. What starts as a routine ghostwriting job spirals into obsession when Lowen uncovers a secret manuscript that hints at disturbing truths about the Crawford family.

Hoover originally self-published Verity in 2018 before it was picked up by Grand Central Publishing in 2021. The book has since become a New York Times bestseller and a fan favorite across TikTok’s #BookTok community.

The adaptation follows the massive box office success of Hoover’s It Ends With Us, which hit theaters in summer 2025 starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, igniting even more demand for Hoover’s growing catalog of thrillers and romantic dramas.

Verity also reunites Showalter and Hathaway, who previously teamed up for the 2024 Amazon hit The Idea of You, based on Robinne Lee’s viral novel.
