How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Movie Gets Streaming Date — When and Where Inside

The beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise is taking flight once again—this time in live-action. The reimagining of DreamWorks’ 2010 animated classic, directed by original filmmaker Dean DeBlois, hit theaters on June 13 and is now reportedly set to arrive on digital platforms.

According to When to Stream, the live-action adventure will be available via premium video on demand (PVOD) starting Tuesday, July 15, although DreamWorks and Universal Pictures have yet to officially confirm the release date.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon is expected to land on Peacock sometime in September or October 2025. This projected release window aligns with Universal Pictures' usual post-theatrical timeline—roughly three to four months after its big-screen debut.

Fans who prefer to stream as part of a subscription service can likely expect How to Train Your Dragon to become available on Peacock shortly after its premium video-on-demand run wraps up.

A Bold Return to Berk

Starring Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Chief Stoick the Vast, the film retells the story of a misunderstood Viking teen who befriends a feared Night Fury dragon named Toothless. Together, they challenge centuries of conflict between dragons and Vikings.

The official synopsis reads:

“On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast defies tradition by befriending Toothless, a feared Night Fury. As an ancient threat looms, Hiccup’s bond with Toothless becomes the key to peace. With Astrid and blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost) by his side, he must rise as a hero and forge a new future for both species.”

Where to Stream

Once released, the film will be available for purchase or rental on major digital platforms including:

  • Apple TV
  • Prime Video
  • Fandango at Home
  • YouTube

Preorders are already live on Prime Video for $29.99 (purchase), with rentals expected to cost $24.99 for a 48-hour viewing window—standard for new PVOD titles.

Box Office & Audience Reception

How to Train Your Dragon opened strong, soaring to $84.6 million domestically in its first weekend. It has since earned $224 million in the U.S. and $592.9 million worldwide, bringing its global box office total to over $816 million. The film was produced on a reported $150 million budget.

Critics awarded the movie a 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading:

“Crafted with loving fidelity to the animated classic by original co-director Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t surpass the original but reaches enchanting heights of its own.”

Audiences have embraced the adaptation even more enthusiastically, with a 97% audience score and over 10,000 verified reviews on the RT Popcornmeter. Viewers praise the emotional storytelling, faithful character portrayals, and the film’s heartwarming blend of humor and heroism.
